The event took place at London’s Royal Opera House, and, in representation of San Pedro, it was attended by Miguel Rencoret, Chief Winemaker of the Organic and Varietal Lines, and Felipe Bravo, Submanager of Exports to Western Europe.

Rencoret received the award granted to our 2008 1865 Limited Edition Blend , from Cachapoal Valley, which obtained the Regional Trophy to the Best Chilean Red Blend over 10Pounds, filling us all with pride.

In previous editions of this prestigious competition, our Castillo de Molina Sauvignon Blanc from Elqui Valley was also awarded, for two consecutive years, the Regional Trophy to the best Chilean Sauvignon Blanc under 10Pounds.

The Decanter World Wine Awards have taken place since year 2004 and are considered the most prestigious and trustworthy international wine competition in the world, setting the guidelines of the best wines for oenophiles around the world year by year, since its results are published in special editions of Decanter magazine, which also carries out multiple related promotional activities throughout the year.

This year’s edition of the DWWA received a staggering amount of 12,252 wines from 44 countries.

This award was announced during the London International Wine Fair, it will be also published on a special edition of Decanter Magazine and already, this competition’s web site features a review of our wine:

“This wine is a fine example of a blend in which not only do the varieties blend seamlessly but the terroir shines through too”.

We are pleased to announce two new very important acknowledgements to add to the list of those already attained in this young year: In its monthly section on the best wines worldwide, Steven Spurrier, Editor of the British magazine Decanter –the most prestigious in the United Kingdom–, and who also chairs the Japan Wine Challenge competition and, of course, the Decanter World Wine Awards, announced: “This month: a brace each from France, Chile and Spain, featuring a sublime Oloroso, a Cotes du Rhone that punches above its weight and a crisp Sauvignon.” Referring with this latter words to our 1865 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2008, which Spurrier qualified as the “Best New World White”, and described as “From cool-climate vineyards just 4km from the Pacific Ocean, this is the second vintage by head winemaker Marco Puyo: white flowers lead to precise yet fleshy fruit with a mineral finish. Complex and long”.

At the same time, Kim Marcus, Managing Editor from the American Wine Spectator magazine, and responsible for tasting Austria, Greece, southern France and the table wines of Portugal, praised our Castillo de Molina Sauvignon Blanc Elqui 2007. In a column where the magazine’s editors talk about what they are tasting on their free time, Marcus categorized this wine as a complete revelation. “I approached this Sauvignon Blanc with some trepidation, because Chilean whites have not impressed me in the past. But this wine from Viña San Pedro was a revelation. It was very minerally and zesty, with a rich viscosity”, he stated.

Marcus even commented on the delight of one of his friends, who normally preferred reds to whites, but was a quick converted to the wine. “It is the first white I’ve ever liked so much. It is light, dry and very smooth—without a lot of fruitiness “, she said.

Besides agreeing with his friend, the winewriter scored this wine with 89 points and celebrated its price, commenting it “costs just” US$13 a bottle.

El primero, del 10 al 17 de Octubre, en que la cadena de grandes tiendas Selfridges organizó en su bar llamado Wonder Bar, donde reunió en exclusiva a los ganadores de los trofeos Decanter para que el público inglés pudiese degustar los vinos premiados por copa. De acuerdo con Dawn Davies, sommelier de Selfridges, “315 personas habían reservado entradas, pero al final contamos más de 500. Fue tan exitoso, que debimos extender la actividad dos días más. Hubo mucha cobertura de prensa y los comentarios fueron excelentes. Los asistentes apreciaron mucho poder probar los vinos sobre los cuales habían leído tanto”.

El otro evento fue el Fine Wine Encounter organizado los días 22 y 23 de noviembre por la propia revista Decanter (organizadora del concurso del mismo nombre), en el cual nuestro vino participó en el Golden Room, reservado sólo a los portadores de trofeos.
